Package {srlars}

Type: Package
Title: Fast and Scalable Cellwise-Robust Ensemble
Version: 3.1.0
Date: 2026-09-19
Maintainer: Anthony Christidis <anthony.christidis@stat.ubc.ca>
Description: Functions to perform robust variable selection and regression using the Fast and Scalable Cellwise-Robust Ensemble (FSCRE) algorithm. The approach establishes a robust foundation using the Detect Deviating Cells (DDC) algorithm and robust correlation estimates. It then employs a competitive ensemble architecture where a robust Least Angle Regression (LARS) engine proposes candidate variables and cross-validation arbitrates their assignment. A final robust MM-estimator is applied to the selected predictors.

Cross-Validated Selection of max_share for FSCRE (cv.srlars)

Description

cv.srlars chooses the max_share argument of srlars by cross-validation and returns the FSCRE ensemble refit on the full data at the cross-validated optimum. The internal cross-validation used by the competitive arbiter inside srlars (controlled by cv_folds) is unrelated and untouched by this function: it decides which variable each sub-model proposes next. cv.srlars adds a separate, outer cross-validation loop whose only job is to pick the best max_share value from share_grid.

To keep this efficient, the expensive cellwise-robust preprocessing stage (DDC imputation, wrapping, and robust correlation estimation) does not depend on max_share, so it is computed only once per outer fold and reused across every candidate value in share_grid for that fold, rather than being recomputed for every (fold, candidate) pair.

Usage

cv.srlars(
  x,
  y,
  n_models = 5,
  share_grid = NULL,
  outer_folds = 5,
  tolerance = 1e-08,
  n_min = NULL,
  max_predictors = NULL,
  x_preprocess = c("ddc", "none"),
  y_preprocess = c("wrap", "robust_z", "none"),
  cor_estimator = c("wrap", "pearson"),
  cv_preprocess = c("global", "foldwise"),
  cv_fit = c("huber", "ls"),
  cv_loss = c("huber", "trimmed", "mse"),
  cv_folds = 5,
  compute_coef = TRUE
)

Arguments

x

Design matrix (n x p).

y

Response vector (n x 1).

n_models

Number of models in the ensemble (K). Default is 5.

share_grid

Integer vector of candidate max_share values to evaluate. Default is 1:n_models.

outer_folds

Integer. Number of outer cross-validation folds used to select max_share. Default is 5.

tolerance

Relative improvement tolerance for stopping (tau). Default is 1e-8.

n_min

Integer or NULL. Minimum number of variables each sub-model is guaranteed (subject to availability), passed through unchanged to every candidate fit and the final refit – cv.srlars does not tune n_min, only max_share. Default is NULL (no floor). See srlars.

max_predictors

Maximum total number of variables to select across all models. Default is n * n_models.

x_preprocess

Character. "ddc" (default) for cellwise cleaning, or "none".

y_preprocess

Character. "wrap" (default) for univariate robustification, "robust_z", or "none".

cor_estimator

Character. "wrap" (default) for robust PSD correlation, or "pearson".

cv_preprocess

Character. "global" (default) or "foldwise" (to prevent data leakage).

cv_fit

Character. "huber" (default) or "ls" for the inner arbiter fitting method.

cv_loss

Character. "huber" (default), "trimmed", or "mse" for arbiter scoring and for scoring max_share candidates in the outer loop.

cv_folds

Integer. Number of internal (arbiter) cross-validation folds. Default is 5.

compute_coef

Logical. If TRUE, fits the final robust MM-models. Default is TRUE.

Value

An object of class c("cv.srlars", "srlars"): the srlars fit at the cross-validated optimal max_share, with three extra components:

max_share

The cross-validated optimal value.

share_grid

The candidate values that were evaluated.

cv_errors

The mean out-of-fold error for each value in share_grid.

Because no coef.cv.srlars or predict.cv.srlars methods are defined, calling coef() or predict() on the result dispatches to coef.srlars / predict.srlars and operates on this optimal fit directly.

FSCRE Competitive Selection Loop (Internal)

Description

Implements Stage 2 of the FSCRE algorithm: the iterative competitive selection using a proposer–arbiter mechanism. Candidate moves are proposed by a robust LARS step computed from the (robust) correlation inputs, and accepted by an arbiter based on cross-validated predictive improvement.

The function supports two CV preprocessing modes:

The selection step terminates when no candidate yields a strictly positive CV improvement, or when the best relative improvement falls below tolerance.

Usage

performSelectionLoop(
  Rx,
  ry,
  x,
  y,
  x.imp,
  y.imp,
  n_models,
  max_predictors,
  tolerance,
  x_preprocess,
  y_preprocess,
  cv_preprocess,
  cv_fit,
  cv_loss,
  cv_folds,
  max_share = 1,
  n_min = NULL
)

Arguments

Rx

Global predictor correlation matrix used by the LARS proposer (p x p).

ry

Global predictor-response correlation vector used by the LARS proposer (length p).

x

Raw design matrix (n x p). Used for foldwise preprocessing if requested.

y

Raw response vector (length n). Used for foldwise preprocessing if requested.

x.imp

Globally preprocessed design matrix (n x p), used when cv_preprocess="global".

y.imp

Globally preprocessed response vector (length n), used when cv_preprocess="global".

n_models

Number of models in the ensemble (K).

max_predictors

Maximum total number of predictors to select across all models.

tolerance

Relative improvement tolerance for stopping (\tau).

x_preprocess

Character. Preprocessing method for predictors in the CV loop (e.g., "ddc" or "none").

y_preprocess

Character. Preprocessing method for response in the CV loop (e.g., "wrap", "robust_z", or "none").

cv_folds

Integer. Number of CV folds.

max_share

Integer. Maximum number of sub-models (1 to n_models) in which a given variable may appear. Default is 1 (fully disjoint sub-models). For 1 < max_share < n_models, each sub-model's first selected variable is forced distinct across sub-models; sharing is only permitted afterward. This restriction is lifted when max_share = n_models.

n_min

Integer or NULL. Minimum number of variables each sub-model is guaranteed (subject to availability under the max_share/diversity pool restrictions), even if no candidate clears the usual positive-benefit or tolerance requirement. Default is NULL (no floor enforced, original behavior).

Value

A list with component:

active.sets

A list of length n_models, where each element is an integer vector of selected variable indices for that sub-model.

Fast and Scalable Cellwise-Robust Ensemble (FSCRE)

Description

srlars performs the FSCRE algorithm for robust variable selection and regression.

Usage

srlars(
  x,
  y,
  n_models = 5,
  max_share = 1,
  tolerance = 1e-08,
  n_min = NULL,
  max_predictors = NULL,
  x_preprocess = c("ddc", "none"),
  y_preprocess = c("wrap", "robust_z", "none"),
  cor_estimator = c("wrap", "pearson"),
  cv_preprocess = c("global", "foldwise"),
  cv_fit = c("huber", "ls"),
  cv_loss = c("huber", "trimmed", "mse"),
  cv_folds = 5,
  compute_coef = TRUE
)

Arguments

x

Design matrix (n x p).

y

Response vector (n x 1).

n_models

Number of models in the ensemble (K). Default is 5.

max_share

Integer. Maximum number of sub-models (1 to n_models) in which a given variable may appear. Default is 1, i.e. fully disjoint sub-models (the original behavior). When 1 < max_share < n_models, each sub-model's first selected variable is forced to be distinct across sub-models (preventing several sub-models from redundantly duplicating the same strongest cold-start predictor); sharing is only permitted for variables added after a sub-model's first pick, up to max_share total uses. When max_share = n_models, this seed restriction is lifted entirely and sub-models are free to become identical.

tolerance

Relative improvement tolerance for stopping (tau). Default is 1e-8.

n_min

Integer or NULL. Minimum number of variables each sub-model is guaranteed to receive (subject to availability), even if a candidate does not clear the usual positive-benefit or tolerance improvement requirements. Default is NULL, i.e. no floor is enforced (the original behavior: a sub-model can stop growing as soon as no candidate across the whole ensemble shows sufficient CV improvement). Must satisfy n_min <= min(n - 1, p). The floor never bypasses max_share/diversity restrictions on which variables are available to a sub-model – only the CV-benefit acceptance requirement is relaxed for sub-models below the floor.

max_predictors

Maximum total number of variables to select across all models. Default is n * n_models.

x_preprocess

Character. "ddc" (default) for cellwise cleaning, or "none".

y_preprocess

Character. "wrap" (default) for univariate robustification, "robust_z", or "none".

cor_estimator

Character. "wrap" (default) for robust PSD correlation, or "pearson".

cv_preprocess

Character. "global" (default) or "foldwise" (to prevent data leakage).

cv_fit

Character. "huber" (default) or "ls" for the inner arbiter fitting method.

cv_loss

Character. "huber" (default), "trimmed", or "mse" for arbiter scoring.

cv_folds

Integer. Number of cross-validation folds. Default is 5.

compute_coef

Logical. If TRUE, fits the final robust MM-models. Default is TRUE.

Value

An object of class srlars containing the selected variables and coefficients.

Ensemble Prediction from a Raw Fit List (Internal)

Description

Averages the per-model linear predictions of an srlars-style fit list (coefficients, intercepts) over a design matrix X. Used by cv.srlars to score candidate max_share values without going through predict.srlars (which expects a full srlars object, not an intermediate candidate fit).

Usage

srlars_ensemble_predict(X, fit)

Arguments

X

Design matrix.

fit

A list with components coefficients (list of numeric vectors) and intercepts (numeric vector), as returned by computeFinalFit.

Value

Numeric vector of ensemble-averaged predictions.
